On Sunday, the authorities in Burkina Faso announced that at least 40 people were killed in an armed attack targeting a military post in the north of the country.
The Secretary-General of the Northern Region Quilja Albert Zongo said that the attack, which was launched by unidentified gunmen, targeted a detachment of soldiers and civilian volunteers last Saturday afternoon.
The attack took place near the village of Orima, about 15 km northeast of the city of Ohigwea.
Zongo added that the initial death toll included "34 volunteers to defend the homeland and 6 soldiers," without giving details of the identity of the party that launched the attack.
According to Anadolu Agency, no party has claimed responsibility for the attack, but since 2015 "terrorist" groups have been targeting northern and eastern Burkina Faso, killing hundreds and displacing nearly a million people.
