"It's great to see you again. It's been a long time." "Yes, yes." These are the words of President Xi Jinping and President Macron when they met during the G20 summit. In the warm wind, the leaders of China and Europe held hands tightly again. On November 15th and 16th, President Xi Jinping successively met with the leaders of four European countries: France, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy. Friendliness, positivity and cooperation are the common tone of several meetings. Following German Chancellor Scholz's visit to China, the diplomacy of the head of state once again steered the helm for the development of China-EU relations.
Meet old and new friends and talk about China-EU friendship
Among the leaders of European countries who met with President Xi this time, there are both old friends and new faces. Dutch Prime Minister Rutte has known President Xi for a long time. As early as 2014, when the two leaders met in The Hague, they proposed to establish an open and pragmatic comprehensive cooperative partnership between China and the Netherlands. Over the past eight years, openness and pragmatism are still the brightest background of bilateral relations. President Macron has exchanged visits, phone calls and videos with President Xi many times. This time in Bali, he congratulated President Xi on his re-election as the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and expressed that the French side is willing to intensify high-level exchanges with the Chinese side, deepen practical cooperation, and strengthen multilateral communication. Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez said during talks with President Xi in 2018 that the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries will usher in a new era of bilateral relations. This year, the leaders of the two countries once again jointly planned activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year, to continue the tradition of friendship and push bilateral relations to a new level.
The new Prime Minister of Italy, Meroni, met President Xi for the first time, but the exchanges between the two ancient civilizations have a long history. This year is the China-Italy Year of Culture and Tourism. The achievements of civilizations at both ends of the Eurasian continent have crossed the ocean and entered the homes of ordinary people. When culture runs errands, the hearts of the people are more connected.
Meet new opportunities and draw a blueprint for cooperation
"The meeting lasted more than 40 minutes", "the duration was 1 hour"… European media responded enthusiastically to the interaction between the leaders of China and Europe. We talked for a long time because we cooperated a lot. Mutual opening of markets, expansion of two-way trade, business exchanges, and a strong economic symbiosis are the status quo of China-EU relations, and they are also a guarantee for maintaining the stability of the supply chains of both sides and promoting the well-being of the Chinese and European people in a changing world. Since the outbreak of the epidemic, China-EU trade has risen against the trend, and the trade volume between China and Germany, France, Jose and Italy has reached new highs every year. From large airplanes to wine, from high-end fashion to pork, Chinese people can find products from Europe everywhere in their daily lives.
President Xi Jinping introduced Chinese-style modernization to many European leaders, emphasizing that after the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, China will be more open, and China's unswerving promotion of high-level opening up will bring new opportunities to all countries. Scientific and technological innovation, high-end manufacturing, aerospace, energy and water conservancy…President Xi proposed many strategic cooperation areas based on the overall development of China and Europe, pointing out the direction for closer, effective and mutually beneficial economic ties between China and Europe. Leaders have more discussions, the two markets are more closely linked, and the people benefit more.
Plan global governance and share international responsibilities
The theme of this year's G20 summit is "Recovery Together, Strong Recovery", calling on the international community to cooperate to meet challenges. In the turbulent international situation, the summit adopted a detailed declaration, fully proving that major countries in the world are willing to unite and shoulder international responsibilities.
As two major forces in the world, China and the EU will work together to inject strong impetus into global governance. In President Xi's meetings with leaders of every European country, improving global governance and addressing global challenges are the focus of discussion. Climate change, biodiversity, food security, energy security, third-party cooperation, sustainable development… In the face of a world full of crises, the consensus between China and Europe has not become less, but more. When the hearts of the people are united, the mountains will be moved, and China and the EU will each contribute their strengths, and global governance will usher in a brighter future.
Adhere to harmony without diversity and maintain world peace
"All things grow together without harming each other, and Tao runs in parallel without conflicting with each other." President Xi called for respecting each other's core interests and major concerns, establishing an objective and rational outlook on China, adhering to the correct path of friendly coexistence between countries with different cultures and systems, and promoting the steady and long-term development of bilateral relations. European leaders all expressed their disapproval of confrontation between camps, and should respect the differences among countries, strengthen dialogue and exchanges, and enhance mutual understanding. President Macron also expressed his admiration for the Chinese-style modernization development model. Ideological differences between China and Europe did not and should not prevent the two sides from strengthening communication and cooperation for the well-being of the Chinese and European people and the fundamental interests of the world.
Cherishing the Charter of the United Nations, supporting multilateralism, and promoting a multipolar world are the common ground between China and Europe. President Xi called on China and the EU to inject stability and positive energy into the world with the spirit of independence, openness and cooperation. Prime Minister Meloni said that China is a major country in the world, and Asia is becoming more and more important in the world. Prime Minister Sanchez emphasized that China has always been a stabilizing force in the international order. European leaders spoke highly of President Xi's important stance that "nuclear weapons should not be used, nuclear wars should not be fought, and nuclear crises in Eurasia should be prevented." President Macron said at the press conference that he felt that President Xi and China called for peace and persuasion Sincerity to stop the war.
President Xi and the four European leaders had a pleasant conversation this time, and both sides look forward to meeting again in China as soon as possible. As the epidemic situation gradually improves, all kinds of personnel exchanges between China and Europe will become more convenient and close. I believe that in the near future, the two ends of the Eurasian continent will be bustling and bustling again!
