China News Agency reporter Wang Guoan
"President Xi Jinping came to Thailand to attend the APEC meeting and visit Thailand. I believe it will further promote the development of Thailand-China relations and promote the friendship between the two countries. Thailand and China have great cooperation space and potential in the future."
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Thailand on the 17th to attend the 29th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Informal Leaders' Meeting and pay a visit to Thailand. Abhisit, the former Prime Minister of Thailand, made the above remarks in an interview with a reporter from China News Agency.
Abhisit said that this visit is President Xi Jinping's first overseas visit after the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and its importance is self-evident. "I think this is an important opportunity to further promote the development of friendly relations between Thailand and China, and to exchange and connect some of the latest ideas and concepts of the two countries."
He said that China is the second largest economy in the world and it is still growing. At present, the world is facing multiple challenges, and people expect China to play an important role in helping the world cope with these challenges.
Abhisit said that China proposed the "Belt and Road" initiative as early as 2013 to promote interconnection, which he agrees with. At present, the initiative has been responded and participated by more than 100 countries. As the host country of the APEC meeting, Thailand decided that the theme of the meeting is "openness, connectivity and balance", and "connectivity" means interconnection. The theme of the meeting reflects Thailand's hope that the Asia-Pacific region will continue to develop, become more open to trade and investment, and achieve maximum connectivity.
China is accelerating the green transformation of its development model, promoting green and low-carbon economic and social development, and promoting the harmonious coexistence of man and nature. Abhisit said that Thailand has also proposed the "biological economy, circular economy and green economy model" (BCG), which is also consistent with China's development philosophy.
He said that Thailand and China have close relations. During the fight against the new crown pneumonia epidemic, Thailand and China supported and helped each other, embodying the "friendship in adversity" and bringing the relationship between the two countries closer. During the epidemic, Thailand-China trade and investment continued to develop.
China has been Thailand's largest trading partner for many years, and it is also Thailand's largest export market for agricultural products and a major source of foreign investment. Relevant data show that in 2021, the trade volume between the two countries will exceed 100 billion U.S. dollars for the first time, reaching 131.2 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of 33%, of which Thailand's agricultural exports to China will increase by 52.4%. From January to September this year, the bilateral trade volume has exceeded 100 billion U.S. dollars, and has maintained a steady development momentum, and is expected to hit a record high throughout the year. This has injected strong impetus into the post-epidemic economic recovery of the two countries.
"In the past, the cooperation between Thailand and China included trade, investment, tourism, agricultural products, etc., and then there were fields such as science and technology, health and health." Abhisit believes that the two sides can continue to explore and expand cooperation areas. There is a lot of space and potential for cooperation.” (Finish)
