Xinhua News Agency, New York, November 22 Feature: Confusion, Helplessness, Disappointment——The Midterm Election in the Eyes of American Voters

The "billing" of the 2022 mid-term elections in the United States has reached a new high. The rich have made generous political donations, and candidates who spend more money have won more votes… The political chaos in the US election has increasingly eroded voters' confidence in American democracy.

New York State has long been controlled by the Democratic Party, but Republican candidates are still fighting fiercely with Democratic candidates in some constituencies in New York State. Nassau County, located east of New York City, is an area where the Democratic and Republican parties compete fiercely in the midterm elections. When interviewed by reporters outside polling stations after voting in the mid-term elections, some local voters denounced the long-standing shortcomings of American democracy and expressed their disappointment with American democracy.

James Gansky, who just moved to Nassau County from Queens, New York City, three months ago, said that the United States is now being destroyed by problems such as inflation, immigration, and crime. Those elected are controlled by the money of the billionaires who got these people elected.

The 56-year-old Gansky runs a decoration company in Queens, New York. His doubt is, since the United States has restrictions on political donations, why can Soros's political donations exceed 100 million US dollars? "Speculators like Soros who make profits by destroying other countries' financial systems must be rewarded for donating money. This is exactly what we are worried about."

Gansky said bluntly that he is not worried about a billionaire being elected, what he is worried about is that someone will become a millionaire or a spokesperson for a billionaire after being elected.

According to preliminary statistics from Open Secrets, a non-profit organization that tracks U.S. campaign finance and lobbying data, the cost of the 2022 U.S. midterm elections will be as high as $16.7 billion, making it the most expensive midterm election in history. Judging from the election results, candidates who spend more money mostly win.

According to "open secrets", since July, the amount of political funding in the mid-term election system is large enough to "affect the political dominance of Congress." The top ten billionaires in the United States spent US$540 million in this mid-term election, of which the donation from Soros was as high as US$128 million.

Voter Paul, 67, who immigrated to the United States from the South American country of Guyana, previously worked in the aerospace industry and is now retired. "Money is the root of all evil, and what we're seeing is that everything in American elections is driven by money," he lamented.

Nassau County voter Bobby is only 19 years old this year, but he has seen a lot of political lobbying. He said he preferred to vote for newcomers who had no prior experience in the political system. Bobby's mother Patricia was blunt: "We don't trust any politicians."

In Gansky's view, how to ensure that a person with pure motives and no self-interest is in power is very important. He himself no longer expects the situation in the United States to change much after the midterm elections, because the Democrats and the Republicans come from "the same unclean swamp."

He said that in the past, Democratic voters voted for Democrats and Republican voters voted for Republicans. But in this vote, I had no choice but to choose the "less bad one" from the candidates of the two parties, and would not vote for a candidate of a fixed party.

When Gansky was being interviewed by reporters, many voters who came out of polling stations stopped to listen and applauded and supported his words from time to time.

"Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak up!" Ganski said. (Participating reporters: Pan Lijun, Zhang Mocheng)
