South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Seabed Authority explore cooperation opportunities

Yonhap News Agency, Seoul, November 25th. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea stated on the 25th that Park Yongmin, the multilateral diplomacy coordinator of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met with the visiting Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Michael Lodge in Seoul on the afternoon of the 24th. The two sides will expand substantive cooperation. plans and other matters were discussed.

South Korea represents the Asia-Pacific region this year as the vice-chair of the ISA Council. The two sides jointly commented that in view of the personnel and hard infrastructure status of the Pacific island countries and South Korea's development experience, the two sides have a bright future for cooperation in South Korea's assistance to developing countries in deep seabed mineral development projects.

Lodge said that the international rules on the commercialization of deep seabed mineral resources should be formulated after coordination and communication among various stakeholders, and called on the South Korean side to actively participate in the consultations. He also expressed his gratitude to South Korea for its active activities as a member of the ISA Council, and expressed that ISA is willing to actively deepen cooperation with South Korea to overcome various challenges faced by ISA.
