The baby is in stable condition and its mother has been taken into custody, police in Louisiana said on Tuesday, July 9
A 1-year-old “miracle baby” has survived after his 4-year-old brother was found dead and their mother was arrested.
On Tuesday, July 9, at approximately 9 a.m. local time, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies were called after a passerby saw a baby in a ditch on I-10 eastbound near mile marker 10 in Vinton, Louisiana, per a news release shared on Facebook.
Police had been searching for the 1-year-old after the body of his 4-year-old brother was found on Monday, July 8 in water near the Vinton Welcome Center, the release stated.
Detectives had been advised that the boy had last been seen on Saturday, July 6 with his mother, Aaliyah N. Jack, 25, of Lake Charles.
Jack was “located in Mississippi, without the 1-year-old, by the Meridian Police Department and taken into custody,” police confirmed. She was charged with failure to report a missing child, and Judge Tony Fazzio issued a $300,000 warrant set bond.
In a press conference on July 9, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Gary “Stitch” Guillory said of the baby that was found, “We looked at this 1-year-old as our miracle baby because he was still alive… unbelievable,” per a video shared by the Associated Press.
“This kid spent two days out in the weather on the side of the highway,” an emotional Guillory continued, adding, “Thank God that trucker seen him.”
Guillory said the 1-year-old had multiple bug bites, but otherwise seemed to be okay, per the AP.
Police confirmed in the news release that the baby had been taken to a local hospital and was in stable condition.

He is now safe and in the care of authorities. We understand the community’s concern and are committed to ensuring justice for the children involved.”
“CPSO detectives are actively working to gather all the information and details surrounding this case and the death of the 4-year-old. We will dedicate all necessary resources to ensure a thorough investigation. Our hearts go out to the family members of these two children,” he added.
“Detectives are continuing the investigation, and more charges are possible. The coroner will determine cause of death,” the release stated.
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Meridian Police Department didn’t immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE.
