In 1883, the Joseon Dynasty signed the Treaty of Commerce and Trade with Germany and the United Kingdom in Seoul (now Seoul). These two treaties, along with the first international treaty with Japan, are the most unequal of the bunch against North Korea.

In 1916, Jang Shi-hoon (1916-1991), the founder of Korean contemporary music history, was born.

In 1925, more than 10,000 Korean tenants in Naju City, Jeollanam-do, which was under the jurisdiction of the Japanese Toyo Takushoku Corporation, clashed with the Japanese police.

In 1959, the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party, elected Zhao Bingyu and Zhang Mian as the party's presidential and vice presidential candidates, against the Liberal Party's presidential and vice presidential candidates Syngman Rhee and Li Qipeng.

In 1986, the South Korean government announced the construction of the "Peace Dam" to deal with the hidden dangers of flood discharge from upstream dams in North Korea. Previously, North Korea claimed that it would build a "Mount Kumgang Dam" on the upper reaches of the Bukhan River near South Korea.

In 1992, the true version of "Jie Shen Mi Jing Shu" written by the eminent monk Yuan Ce of Silla was discovered.

In 1995, the South Korean government began to re-investigate the "Double Twelve Military Rebellion" and the "Gwangju Democratization Movement". On December 12, 1979, the military's new forces composed of Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo mobilized troops without the approval of the then President Cui Kyu-ha and forcibly arrested Army Chief of Staff Chung Seung-hwa. There is a military conflict. The event was dubbed the "Double Twelve Military Rebellion". The "Gwangju Democratization Movement", also known as the "May 18th Democratization Movement", broke out in Gwangju on May 18, 1980. It was a democratic movement that local students and citizens demanded to overthrow the military dictatorship and return power to the people. Chun Doo-hwan, who held military power at the time, ordered a violent suppression, causing a large number of civilian casualties.

In 1998, from the late 1970s to the early 1980s, Cho Se-heng, a thief who robbed the rich and gave to the poor in South Korea, was released after being imprisoned for 15 years.

In 1999, the largest surviving wooden pagoda base in Korea was unearthed at Sisangsa Temple in Namwon, Jeollanam-do.

In 2000, South Korean President Kim Dae-jung held talks with Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea was established in 2001.

In 2003, Choi Byung-yeol, the leader of the largest opposition party, the Grand National Party, went on a hunger strike at the Central Party Headquarters to protest against President Roh Moo-hyun's veto of the independent inspection bill passed by the Congress, and asked Roh Moo-hyun to allow the independent inspection team to investigate his cronies' involvement in corruption.

In 2015, the farewell ceremony for the body of the late former President Kim Young-sam was held.

In 2018, traditional wrestling on the Korean Peninsula was selected into the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This is the first time that South and North Korea have been jointly selected as intangible cultural heritage.

In 2020, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit Seoul, South Korea, meet with South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-hwa, and President Moon Jae-in.
