2024 Paris Olympics closing ceremony: Live updates as performers hand off

The 2024 Paris Olympics have come to a close — but the fun isn’t over yet, as the closing ceremony is expected to be full of hundreds of performers… including Tom Cruise!

The closing ceremony will kick off at 3 p.m. ET. and is expected to last just over two hours. Unlike the opening ceremony, which took place in and around the Seine River, the event will be held in Stade de France.

Jimmy Fallon and NBC’s Primetime in Paris host Mike Tirico are leading coverage of the closing ceremony. You can watch it on NBC or on NBC’s streaming app, Peacock.

Sunday’s ceremony, planned by artistic director Thomas Jolly, who also coordinated the opening ceremony, will include “over a hundred performers, acrobats, dancers and circus artists,” the Paris Olympic Committee said. Jolly said the theme of Sunday’s event is “Records.”

Organizers added that the ceremony will feature an original soundtrack and musical performances with “world-renowned singers” and “part of the show will take place in the air, while the giant sets, costumes and spectacular lighting effects will take spectators on a journey through time, both past and future.”

And to top it all off, H.E.R. is set to sing the U.S. national anthem and Tom Cruise is expected to perform a skydiving stunt as part of a handoff to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Eiffel Tower evacuated after British man climbs iconic landmark, leading to arrest

Hours before the closing ceremony for the 2024 Olympics was set to begin in Paris, police reportedly arrested an unidentified British man who was caught climbing the Eiffel Tower.

Police told CNN that the tower has been evacuated, though no further details were shared. And although the tower itself was a centerpiece of the opening ceremony, it’s not expected to play any role in the closing ceremony.

Multiple clips shared on social media show the shirtless man scaling over the Olympic Rings, which were installed on the tower to commemorate the games in Paris. In one video, the blonde, bearded man is seen being escorted in handcuffs while looking to the camera and saying, “Bloody warm, innit?”
