Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege has died following an accident during the Tour of Austria on Saturday.

The 25-year-old, who had been with Norwegian team Coop–Repsol since 2021, was fatally injured on the descent of the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain.

A statement by the Tour of Austria said that Drege “sustained severe injuries” on stage four of the five-day race.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we have to announce the passing of Andre Drege,” the statement read.

“Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with Andre’s family and loved ones, his team Coop-Repsol, during this incredibly difficult time.”

Coop-Repsol said they are “devastated” by Drege’s death and asked that his family’s request for privacy is respected.

Drege had won seven races this year and was expected to move up to World Tour level with the Jayco-AlUla team in 2025.

Fellow World Tour team Intermarche-Wanty said: “We are heartbroken to learn the passing of our fellow colleague cyclist Andre Drege, who had a wonderful career ahead of him.”

The tragedy comes just over a year since Swiss cyclist Gino Mader died at the age of 26 after crashing on stage five of the Tour de Suisse.
