Heat advisory for Northern Delaware on Monday and Tuesday

If you have been putting off doing things because of the heat, humidity and air quality, it looks like you are likely to be waiting a while longer.

According to the National Weather Service, parts of Delaware will remain under a heat advisory until at least Tuesday at 8 p.m.. And the air quality, while better than Saturday, is not expected to be reach healthy levels.

The week’s heat advisory begins at 10 a.m. Monday. Heat index values up to 104 are expected, according to the National Weather Service for portions of northern Delaware, most of New Jersey and southeast Pennsylvania.

The according to the new warning, “Peak heat indices on Wednesday are forecast to reach or exceed 100 degrees, and therefore an extension of this heat advisory into Wednesday is probable.”

According to the National Weather Service, “a heat advisory is issued within 12 hours of the onset of extremely dangerous heat conditions. This advisory is when the maximum heat index temperature is expected to be 100 degrees or higher for at least two days and night time air temperatures will not drop below 75 degrees. These also vary across the country. Take precautions to avoid heat illness. If you don’t take precautions, you may become seriously ill or even die.”

What is the heat index?

The heat index is what “the temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity is combined with the air temperature,” according to the National Weather Service. The combined reading of temperature and humidity is a better estimate of how the human body is feeling the heat.

“When the body gets too hot, it begins to perspire or sweat to cool itself off. If the perspiration is not able to evaporate, the body cannot regulate its temperature. Evaporation is a cooling process … When the atmospheric moisture content (i.e. relative humidity) is high, the rate of evaporation from the body decreases. In other words, the human body feels warmer in humid conditions,” according to the weather service.

How hot will it be in Delaware?

The temperature Monday in the Wilmington region is expected to reach a high of 95 degrees, with mostly sunny skies, high humidity and a chance of thundershowers. The low Monday night is expected to be 75 degrees.

Tuesday’s forecast calls for a high of 94, but predictions are that it will only cool to 76 degrees Tuesday night.

While the heat advisory for the region is set to expire Tuesday, temperatures Wednesday and Thursday are still anticipated to remain in the low 90s during the day, thunderstorms possible much of the week.

Delaware air quality forecast

While Delaware experienced some poor air quality alerts this weekend, the air quality rating moved from orange (unhealthy for sensitive groups) to yellow (moderate) on Sunday. For Monday and Tuesday, the rating remains at moderate, per the Air Quality Index.

By Friday, meteorologists report that the Wilmington region may see a high of only 86 degrees, but the heat is expected to rise again next weekend. Enjoy it while you can, Delaware.

Whatever you decide to do, pace yourself, stay hydrated, seek shade when outdoors and remember to check on elderly folks, pets and anyone with health issues.
