France’s Greens want to govern after the surprise election victory of the new NFP left-wing alliance in which they took part.
“We have won and now we will govern,” Green Party Secretary General Marine Tondelier said in Paris.
“Tonight there is a high probability that the [New] Popular Front will be ahead,” said Tondelier. “Tonight social justice has won, tonight ecological justice has won and tonight the people have won and now it’s just getting started.”
The highest voter turnout since 1981 showed how important the general election was to the people of France, said Tondelier. “This is a beautiful victory for democracy, it belongs to all of you.”
“We were on the top of our game thanks to the New Popular Front,” said the Green Party leader. “This is an immense hope created by this left-wing coalition and the Greens, which is the event of this election.”
The new left-wing alliance of Greens, Socialists, Communists and the leftists was formed only four weeks ago, the Green leader emphasized.
