Jul. 7—BORDULAC, N.D. — Most of the fire that occurred following a train derailment near Bordulac has been extinguished, said Andrew Kirking, emergency manager for Foster and Stutsman counties.
In an email update issued on Sunday afternoon, July 6, Kirking said Canadian Pacific Kansas City railway company response crews including operations, environmental and hazardous materials teams, are continuing the response and cleanup in coordination with emergency response officials.
The derailment occurred around 3:30 a.m. Friday, July 6, and more than 20 cars reportedly derailed, Kirking said Friday. Hazardous materials were reported in the cars that derailed and fires occurred following the derailment, with crews from Carrington, Kensal and other fire departments responding, Kirking said.
Crews are working to complete the removal and isolation of the derailed rail cars containing methanol, anhydrous ammonia and plastic pellets, he said.
Kirking said as crews worked to clean up the hazardous materials cars early Sunday, air monitors detected low levels of anhydrous ammonia in the air after a rail car began venting during removal from the immediate derailment site. As a precaution, local emergency officials issued a shelter-in-place notice for residents near the derailment site. Air monitoring levels at the site and surrounding areas on Sunday morning have returned to zero and the shelter-in-place notice has been lifted, Kirking said.
CPKC has been working closely with local, state and federal officials since the incident occurred and thanked responders for their work, he said.
No injuries were reported to the two-person crew on the train or residents in the area of the derailment. Bordulac is about 10 miles southeast of Carrington, North Dakota.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Railroad NTSB and FRA investigators have been at the scene since Saturday.
