Vernon Kay shares which BBC host he couldn’t work with as stint ‘would be a nightmare’

Vernon Kay has shared why he believes working with his BBC Radio 2 co-host Richie Anderson on The One Show would be “a director’s nightmare”, in a humorous exchange on the airwaves today.

Ahead of fronting BBC’s evening show with Lauren Laverne this evening, the presenter asked Richie if he was also a part of the line-up, to which he confirmed that he wasn’t.

Following this, Richie, 36, jokingly remarked: “They said they tend to not put me and you on together because we’d be too good.”

Agreeing, Vernon, 50, replied: “Oh, we’d overrun!”

“It’s not fair on all the other channels,” Richie continued, laughing.

Imagining how their shared gig would go, Vernon went on to liken it to “a director’s nightmare” as they’d be “all over the place” when it came to sticking to the schedule.

After his co-star said he could imagine they’d also run over the programme that follows, the presenter added: “We would, ‘we’re not going, we’re staying here, move over’.”

The BBC host has been fronting a variety of shows since taking part on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! in 2020, following reports that his career was on the rocks before he signed up.

In February 2023, he became Ken Bruce’s replacement on BBC Radio 2 after the latter stepped following a 31-year reign.

Ahead of his first show, Vernon said taking over from the broadcasting legend was “a dream come true” and “an honour”.

He concluded in a statement: “I’m absolutely over the moon to be handed the microphone.”

RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research) later reported that there had been a decline in listeners since Vernon took over, but the host has claimed he isn’t focusing on the figures.

Addressing the dip in numbers, he recently told The Sun’s Fabulous Magazine: “I don’t worry about that. There’s been a drop since Ken left, which is understandable, as the guy was there for 31 years.

“And then we’ve plateaued for the past three months.”

The husband of Tess Daly went on to say he will only grow concerned if Helen Thomas, the head of BBC Radio 2, has an issue with it, adding: “I’ll just do my job and I’m having the best time doing it.”
