Nationwide sandwich shop chain opens 19th Jacksonville-area restaurant on Fleming Island

A nationwide sandwich shop is ready to open its 19th Jacksonville-area restaurant in neighboring Clay County.

Jersey Mike’s Subs will open Wednesday at 1560 Business Center Drive at the Shops at Eagle Harbor on Fleming Island.

As part of the grand opening, franchise owner Thomas Tyrrell is conducting a fundraiser benefitting Wolfson Children’s Hospital through July 14.

“We have partnered with Wolfson Children’s Hospital to raise funds that will go towards assisting it in continuing to provide outstanding care to the children of Fleming Island and surrounding communities,” Tyrrell said in a news release announcing the new restaurant.

Customers who receive a special fundraising coupon distributed through a grassroots effort before Wednesday’s opening can make a minimum $3 contribution to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in exchange for a regular sub. Customers must have a coupon to be eligible, according to the fundraiser. The fundraiser is only at the Fleming Island store.

The sub shop chain currently has 10 Jacksonville sandwich shops open. Also open in Northeast Florida are two Jersey Mike’s in St. Augustine and one each in Atlantic Beach, Fernandina Beach, Yulee, Orange Park, Saint Johns, and Ponte Vedra Beach, state Department of Business and Professional Regulation records show.

Founded in 1956, the sandwich shop chain is known for its fresh sliced, freshly sliced made-to-order, handcrafted sub sandwiches that range in size from mini to regular or giant.

The subs can be served “Mike’s Way” with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, red wine vinegar, olive oil blend, oregano and salt or guests can customize the toppings. The sandwiches also can be ordered as wraps or bowls.
