Jul. 11—Portland City Manager Danielle West has recommended a former member of the Mercy Corps to serve as director of the city’s Health and Human Services Department.
The City Council will consider the appointment of Maggie McLoughlin to the post at its meeting Monday night.
The position has been open since December following the resignation of Kristen Dow. Deputy Director Shaza Stevenson has been serving as interim director of the department.
The Health and Human Services Department oversees the city’s Social Services division, Public Health, Elder Services, and the Barron Center, the city’s long-term nursing and rehabilitation facility.
Since 2014, McLoughlin has held senior management roles at Mercy Corps, a humanitarian aid organization that operates in regions that have undergone economic, environmental, social and political instability. Most recently she served as the director of programs in Abuja, Nigeria.
She holds a master’s of public health from George Washington University.
McLoughlin will earn $150,282 a year. When Dow resigned, she was earning $157,103.
Pending council approval, she will start her new position on Aug. 19.
