Emmerdale star shares why Samson tells the truth in Josh story

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale star Sam Hall has revealed why his character Samson Dingle finally tells the truth about what happened on the day he was stabbed at The Hide.

In scenes airing on the ITV soap next week, Samson takes steps to clear Matty Barton’s name by speaking to the police to change his statement after his step-mum Lydia urges him to come clean.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press about what prompts Samson’s change of heart, Hall said his character’s “own conscience” begins to weigh down on him.

“There’s multiple stages of pressure and the pressure will build and, of course, that would have an effect and potentially guide his own conscience to tell the truth in the end,” he said.

“But I do think that, deep down, his morals are correct. So I think in the end, he himself thinks, ‘This isn’t the right thing to do. We need to do what’s right here.’ I do think it’s him.”

The actor continued: “As we’ve seen with Samson previously in storylines, he sometimes says the wrong things and gets persuaded fairly easily by people through either fear or fear of the unknown.”

However, Hall explained that Samson always “comes out to do the right thing” and “reverse what wrong he’s done” in the end, as this is what his father Sam and stepmother Lydia have always encouraged him to do.

Discussing why Samson allowed Matty to stay in prison for so long before finally coming clean, Hall said that the teen had “got involved with the wrong person” in Josh and felt threatened and coerced by him.

“I think he was threatened because Josh had mentioned that he had family behind him who weren’t to be messed with. And I think he felt very threatened and pressured by Josh not to say anything,” he shared.

“Josh was lying to him saying, ‘If we tell the truth, we’ll both go to prison’, and that constant voice in his ear of Josh made him scared and fear the consequences of saying what the actual truth was.

“I think it just stopped him from admitting the truth from the offset because he was so scared of going to prison himself.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
