Jul. 13—A Geneva High School graduate is a finalist for Ms. Veteran American 2024 and is hoping to make people aware of the needs of veterans at the same time.

Cassandra Guzman, a 2008 graduate of Geneva High School, said she grew up in Geneva from the time she was 5 years old until her graduation and wanted to honor her journey and give back to the community.

“This competition highlights the unique challenges female veterans face and provides a platform to advocate for causes close to my heart, especially supporting homeless female veterans,” Guzman said.

“Geneva was home until the Air Force sent me to my first duty station, which was Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska,” she said in an email interview.

“Growing up in Geneva, Ohio, and spending summers in Geneva-on-the-Lake instilled in me a deep sense of community, resilience, and service,” Guzman said.

“Geneva’s close-knit spirit taught me the value of supporting others, which has been a cornerstone of my military career.”

She said Geneva shaped her character and values, guiding through her military journey. “I still have an incredible support system there and have family and friends that have supported me up until this point in life and throughout my time in the service,” she said.

The event is scheduled for Oct. 13 in Orlando, Florida.

“Ms Veteran America is a competition that celebrates the strength and contributions of female Veterans, featuring segments like interviews, talent showcases and advocacy. It highlights their diverse roles and provides a plat form for addressing issues affecting female Veterans,” she said.

Guzman said is presently a realtor and interior designer in Orlando after serving in the U.S. Air Force for a decade. Guzman said she led teams of 20 leaders including work in logistics management, instruction technology, behavioral science and interior design.

“I recently acquired a Master’s of Science in Real Estate from the University of Central Florida,” she said.

Guzman said she has also worked as a mentor through Habitat for Humanity projects.

“Adjusting to civilian life after military service can be difficult, including finding employment, reconnecting with family and friends, and accessing Veteran services and that is why I am doing Ms. Veteran America 2024 to help and support other female veterans transitioning out of the service,” Guzman said.

She said proceeds from the Ms. Veteran America competition benefit Final Salute which is a non-profit dedicated to supporting homeless women Veterans.
