Photos have been shared of the heartbreaking tributes left by Jay Slater’s family at the ravine where the missing teenager’s body was found. On Monday, July 15, a body was found near the village of Masca in Tenerife – four weeks after the 19-year-old had disappeared.
On Tuesday, July 16, the Canary Islands Higher Court of Justice confirmed that the body was that of the British tourist after fingerprints were matched. The Spanish Civil Guard said Mr Slater, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, could have fallen in the steep and inaccessible area where he was discovered.
Following the confirmation, Jay’s mother Debbie Duncan, who had travelled to Tenerife in the search for her son alongside his father, Warren Slater, and his brother, Zack, issued a heartfelt tribute. “I just can’t believe this could happen to my beautiful boy,” she said. “Our hearts are broken.”

The family has also left messages near the ravine where Jay’s body was found. One message, adorned with bouquets of flowers and blue ribbons, read: ‘To my Boy, love Dad xxx Always’. Another was tucked in with a bouquet of flowers, which read: ‘To my beautiful boy. We never found you. I miss you so much. You will be forever young and forever missed. Love you so much, Mum xxx’.
Another message read: ‘Love you little bro. Never in a million years did I think I’d be doing this. I’ll look after mum and dad. Hope you’re partying up there with Grandad. Hope to see you again some day. Rest easy bro, I love you, Zak xx’. A little teddy bear with the word ‘England’ and British flags on it had also been left near the messages.
The extensive police search in the mountains near Masca was called off roughly two weeks after Jay disappeared on June 17. However, mountain rescue police specialists carried on with a more discreet, smaller-scale daily search. The body of the missing teenager was found in the rugged terrain, known for having some of the most treacherous hiking conditions on the island. You can read more about this here.
It was also revealed that the body was discovered near where Jay’s phone last signalled on Monday, June 17, along with his clothes and personal items. The teenager vanished while on his first holiday abroad with friends at a three-day music festival, the NRG Tenerife Weekender.
