Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian reveals shock diagnosis despite having ‘no symptoms’

Alexis Ohanian, the 41-year-old entrepreneur and husband of tennis superstar Serena Williams, has revealed he’s been diagnosed with Lyme disease. The co-founder of Reddit, who shares two children with Williams – six-year-old Olympia and 11-month-old Adira – disclosed his health status on social media.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Alexis said: “Doing a full battery of health scans, tests, etc, and found out I have lyme disease. Wild. No symptoms, thankfully, but gonna treat. Good cholesterol is too low. Bad cholesterol is just OK. Gotta work on that. On the plus-side: 822 ng/dL total + 162 ng/dL free testosterone”.

In another post Alexis shared that a close acquaintance had previously battled the disease, displaying numerous symptoms before finally being diagnosed and treated successfully. He said: “I’ve got a loved one who had it a few years back, showed tons symptoms etc and just couldn’t figure it out until they tested him for it and then found it (treated it successfully, too). I spend so little time in the wilderness/northeast this was quite a surprise.”

Lyme disease, which is contracted through the bite of an infected tick, can cause a range of symptoms including fever, rash, facial paralysis, irregular heartbeat, and arthritis. If not promptly treated the infection can spread to the nervous system. You can read more about the illness here.

Following the announcement of his illness the founder of Reddit told followers that he’ll be taking antibiotics as treatment, joining other celebrities such as Avril Lavigne and Justin Bieber who have battled the same disease. He humorously urged his followers not to consider him a source of medical advice saying: “Anyway, gonna grab some antibiotics – can’t keep me down, tick! (Please talk to a doctor! Do not listen to me for any health advice! )”. For the latest TV and showbiz news sign up to our newsletter.
