We tried orange cordial from every supermarket, this is where you want to splash your cash

Buying a simple orange cordial isn’t as straightforward as it used to be.

These days there are all kinds of flavours to choose from, with mango and pineapple just a couple of fruits they choose to mix it with.

It doesn’t even come in the same strength either – in one supermarket it’s just cordial, in another it’s double strength, or even more, quadruple strength.

I’m not a fan of the quadruple to be honest. I think most people just get used to pouring a set amount and when you’ve done it for so many years, it’s hard to tell your brain that a minuscule amount is enough. Even harder to get the kids to realise that.

Despite that we decided to put the various supermarket orange cordials to the test.

All sell a 1.5-litre bottle, with Lidl, Aldi, Asda and Morrisons all selling a double strength version and Tesco and Sainsbury’s quadruple.

Obviously we altered the amount of cordial accordingly and added the same amount of water to each one.

It was actually Asda’s double strength one that looked the strongest in the glass, but it actually wasn’t that strong on flavour and we didn’t particularly like the taste.

Lidl’s was a little on the weak side and we didn’t get enough of an orange flavour from Tesco’s. Yet we found Aldi’s double strength and Sainsbury’s 4X version a little too overpowering, the latter one tasting much too sweet.

It was the double strength Morrisons one that came out on top – a nice orange flavour that seemed less artificial than the others.

Price wise they’re all pretty similar – that’s if you do actually only use half the amount of the quadruple ones that are double the price. And they’re much cheaper than the big brands.

The Morrisons one is among the three cheapest, priced at 95p for a 1.5-litre bottle. So you’re not exactly splashing out for that fresh, juicy flavour.

Supermarket, price

  • Morrisons 195p

  • Asda 95p

  • Lidl 95p

  • Aldi 99p

  • Sainsbury’s £2.20

  • Tesco £2
