President Joe Biden is slated to visit Austin on Monday for a speech at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library. Biden’s visit, originally set for July 15, was postponed after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
As with past presidential visits, Biden’s trip will lead to widespread road closures around the city. The Texas Department of Transportation confirmed that there will be “rolling closures on major roadways,” including the I-35 and SH 71, during the visit.

While the Austin Police Department has not made the president’s exact route available to the public, Austinites should be prepared for a few potential scenarios based on past presidential visits to the city:
Rolling road closures from Austin’s airport to LBJ Library
Biden is expected to land in Austin around 2:30 p.m. on Monday and drive from the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to the LBJ Library. Typically, the fastest route between the airport and the library takes the I-35 North to Dean Keaton Street, the same route that former presidents Trump and Obama took when visiting the city.
Otherwise, the President may take State Highway 183, connect to Airport Boulevard, and drive straight to Manor Road.
Getting off Highway 183 at East 7th is another route to the library, though it is unlikely that the President would opt for this path considering the complications of shutting down multiple streets within the city.
Manor Road and Red River Street, both in the immediate vicinity of the LBJ Library, will likely see at least partial road closures, though the library was unable to confirm any logistics about President Biden’s visit.
Austin airport delays also expected
In addition to road closures and increased traffic, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport advised travelers that those traveling Monday afternoon should expect 15-30 minute travel delays.
What will Biden do during his visit?
Biden will give a speech commemorating Lyndon B. Johnson’s signing of the Civil Rights Act 60 years ago. Though the event is closed to the public, the speech will be livestreamed on YouTube starting around 3 p.m.
