Preparedness Training offered Aug.8 at Senior Center

PLATTSBURGH — No matter the ferocity of the wind, waves or whatever, seniors have a chance to learn how to become their own first responders with a “Preparedness Training,” 10-11 a.m. Aug. 8 at the Senior Citizens Council of Clinton County.

“The Citizen Preparedness Corps, it’s new,” Patricia Cosgrove, program coordinator, said.

“It is from Homeland Security and Emergency Services of New York State. We were approached to hold this class. It’s a private training event. I don’t know what it’s going to look like. Disaster kits are not distributed at these events. They are going to do a presentation on what to do with severe weather events because they seem to be getting worse and worse. It teaches residents to have the tools and resources to prepare for any type of disaster, respond accordingly, and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions.

“The training course will provide and introduction to responding to a natural or man-made disaster. Participants will be advised on how to properly prepare for any disaster including developing a family emergency plan and stacking up on emergency supplies.”

Anyone can attend the event at the Senior Center located at 5139 North Catherine Street in Plattsburgh

“The Army National Guard and the Air National Guard are a part of it,” Cosgrove said.

“They’re the feet on the ground, and that’s all we really know about it. People can call me to register. There’s a maximum of 50 people. This is awesome. It should be really interesting. We’ve never had it. With all the floods and stuff that’s happening more, they’ll just trying to teach the public on how to deal with it and probably what program are out there.”

To register, call 518-563-6180.
