Matt Baker says ‘I knew we’d be in trouble’ after worrying family call

TV star Matt Baker has shared a harrowing account of the moment he realised his family was “in trouble” following a distressing accident at their homestead. His mother, 77-year-old shepherdess Janice, was struck by sheep back in 2021, which resulted in her suffering a fractured leg.

This accident occurred just as Matt had stepped down from The One Show to focus on his new TV production venture, with intentions to take a step back from the limelight. However, an unnerving call from his dad conveying his mum’s accident and her pressing need for medical attention meant that plans would have to change.

Quick to action, Matt began orchestrating the movements of not just his family but also the farm animals, making a beeline for their northern estate. He said: “My mum is the shepherdess, I mean there’s no doubt about it, she runs the show up there and I knew straight away that we were going to be in trouble.

“We kind of, as a family, had been waiting for something like this to happen, because it was only ever going to be some farming thing or the sheep that were ever going to tell mum that things needed to change.” For the latest TV & Showbiz news, sign up to our newsletter

Matt added: “Because I knew the workload that was up there, I felt I had no choice and thought let’s just get back up there. We put all the animals in the trailer and headed up north. I just started to do these changes because we needed to change the sheep that we had”, reports the Mirror.

While brainstorming new programme ideas with television executives amidst the chaos of his family farm, Matt was initially reluctant when it was suggested to turn his farming life into a show. However, after ensuring he could oversee production, his family agreed to participate.

The result was the creation of ‘Our Farm in the Dales’, which Matt discussed on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live: “They were actually a big part of the edit process because I was doing it all at home in lockdown,” he revealed. “It’s unbelievable that all this happened during lockdown.”

The show, ‘Matt Baker: Our Farm in the Dales’, gave audiences a glimpse into the life of Matt’s family, including his wife Nicola and their children Molly and Luke. Following this, Matt presented ‘Our Dream Farm with Matt Baker’ on Channel 4, where couples vied for the chance to run a 340-acre farm at Wallington Estate.

The series concluded with a livestock auctioneer and his partner securing a ten-year tenure on the farm. In addition to his TV roles, the former gymnast has also been providing commentary for the Paris Olympics this year.
