Proposed Anderson city budget includes 4% pay raise

Aug. 12—ANDERSON — The proposed budget for the city of Anderson in 2025 is $41.8 million, an increase of 1% over the current budget.

The budget proposal includes a 4% pay increase, the same increase approved last year, for all elected officials and other full-time employees not covered by union contracts.

On Wednesday and Thursday, city council will review the budget, which was presented by Mayor Thomas Broderick Jr. and City Controller Doug Whitham.

In a letter to council, Broderick said the city’s operating balance is $19 million and proposed that $2 million from the unappropriated operating balance be transferred to the city’s rainy day fund, which would increase that fund to $7.8 million.

Included in the budget is $4.8 million for street paving, with $1.5 million set aside to match the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Community Crossing grant funds.

This year the city administration budgeted $3.1 million for street paving.

Also in the budget is $700,000 to purchase patrol cars for the Anderson Police Department and $1.6 million for the Anderson Fire Department to purchase a new fire truck for the Cross Street station, purchase a new ambulance, pave the parking lot at the 8th Street station and do exterior work on the 29th Street station.

The budget includes one-time expenditures of $700,000 for city park improvements, and $595,000 for additional protective gear for the police department and expansion of the APD’s Flock camera and shot detection systems.

The proposed budget would also set aside $1.2 million to pay for the operation of Central Dispatch, with Madison County set to provide $1.5 million for it.

In his budget proposal letter to council, Broderick noted that employee health insurance costs have not increased for nine years.
