What did you miss?
Christine McGuinness admitted she was “relieved” to be going home as she was eliminated from Celebrity MasterChef.
The model and TV star was sent packing after the latest heat in the celeb series, where she was up against Tamer Hassan, Jamie MacDonald, Jake Quickenden and Emma Thynn. McGuinness – who was diagnosed with autism in 2021 – had shared that she had some sensory issues around food and typically ate a “beige” diet, but was trying to step out of her comfort zone.
As judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode told her that her time in the kitchen had come to an end, she said she was “really, really proud” of herself but confessed: “I am relieved, I am!”
What, how and why?
McGuinness, whose three young children with her ex Paddy McGuinness are also autistic, had told how she had struggles around food and avoided certain tastes and textures. But she said she was pushing herself by going on the challenging BBC programme.
However, as the episode got under way on Tuesday (27 August) some viewers were left scratching their heads over the meals she was serving up – scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage on toast and then chicken nuggets and chips.
“Scrambled egg on toast? C’mon,” one said on X, as another posted a confused emoji and asked: “Chicken nuggets and chips?!”
The star acknowledged she might not have the best culinary skills, saying during the contest: “I am definitely not a lover of being in the kitchen for too long. What am I doing here? It’s MasterChef, I am so far away from being a chef or a master of anything! Oh well, God loves a trier!”
While Wallace and Torode noted that her breakfast and nuggets were well cooked and tasty, nobody was surprised when McGuinness was cut.
Smiling as her name was announced, she exclaimed: “I am relieved, I am!” “I am really, really proud of myself that I even went into a kitchen that I wasn’t familiar with, that I tried to make food that I had never made before. But I was well out of my comfort zone. That was too much of a stretch for me.”
She went on: “I am going to carry on cooking at home and I am happy that I have done it.” But she added that she was relieved that she didn’t have to keep doing it on TV.
Viewers praised Christine McGuinness’s courage
The judges applauded McGuinness’s bravery in going on the programme and viewers agreed. “Well she’s not the best cook but I thought Christine was really brave to face her fears and seems like a sweetheart!” one said on X.
“Christine has autism so fair play to her,” said another. One fan wrote: “How courageous was Christine McGuinness! That must have been so stressful for her but she did a wonderful job & is rightly proud! She also did a wonderful job educating on #autism.”
