Supermarket spends fourth week as ‘cheapest’ for essentials like bread and milk after swiping crown from Lidl

A supermarket is spending the fourth week running as cheapest for a basket of essentials after swiping the crown from Lidl.

In our price comparison of the same eight basics at the six main supermarkets, it’s Lidl that has come out on top throughout much of the cost of living crisis.

But in recent weeks, it’s been pipped by Aldi, which is working out cheapest for the fourth week running for the basket of items, which includes tea bags, coffee, milk, bread, butter, beans, chicken and mince.

Prices have fluctuated over recent weeks with retailers increasing the price of tea bags and their cheapest loaves.

And there’s another price hike this week, with Asda putting the price of a 300g pack of chicken breasts up from £2.50 to £2.65, a 6% jump.

The rise means the supermarket is now just a penny less than the second most expensive Sainsbury’s and 10p less than the most expensive Tesco, which is the only other retailer selling the chicken at that price. At Aldi and Lidl, the same size pack costs £2.25.

Aldi’s bill of £12.02 for the basket of essentials is just a penny less than Lidl. Morrisons is third cheapest at £12.31, followed by Asda’s £12.55 and Sainsbury’s £12.56.

Tesco, at £12.65, remains the most expensive of the lot, a position it’s held since May, and is the only other one to increase the price of a product this week, putting a penny on the price of its budget Stockwell beans, making them 29p a tin.

As always and despite coming out victorious, Aldi disputes the results of our weekly comparison and says that it doesn’t take into account like-for-like products or ‘the higher quality’ of its products. For example, the supermarket says that its beans are 20g heavier than Sainsbury’s and that Aldi tea bags are ‘better quality than the comparative products used’.

Asda also disagrees with our comparison and says that our small sample of products does not represent the fuller picture of prices and does not account for its deals. The supermarket says that, across the board, its Just Essentials range is the largest and cheapest available, alongside Aldi’s.
