A man who authorities say died by suicide at a Nevada casino has been linked to the killing of a woman in California.

The man, whose identity has not been made public, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a casino in Reno, Nev., according to a statement from the Yuba City Police Department in California. It’s unclear when the man was found.

Following the discovery, Reno police asked Yuba City police to do a welfare check on a woman. On Sunday, Aug. 25, officers responded to the woman’s apartment and found her dead, per the release. Police said the deaths are being investigated as a murder-suicide and did not share any information about a potential connection between the two.

PEOPLE reached out to the Yuba City Police Department for comment on Thursday, Sept. 5 but did not immediately hear back.

The woman’s name also hasn’t been released by police, but she was identified by loved ones as 38-year-old Catalina Aceves on a GoFundMe campaign created to help offset funeral expenses.

The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office also confirmed the woman’s identity, adding that Aceves was killed on Aug. 25, ABC 10 reports.

“Cathy was a cherished mother, daughter, sister, aunt and best friend,” Marisela Aceves wrote on the fundraising page. “She was a happy, soulful, and spiritual woman who was a guiding light to everyone that had the pleasure of having her in their life.”
