Chick-fil-A, Shake Shack and EV charging stations now at Thruway rest stop in Sloatsburg

The Sloatsburg rest stop in Rockland County, the largest of the New York State Thruway Authority’s 27 service areas, has reopened after a largescale renovation that included the addition of Chick-fil-A and Shake Shack restaurants.

The rest stop on northbound I-87 between exits 15A and 16 becomes the 19th to reopen as part of a $450 million overhaul of Thruway service areas. It was one of four that underwent a total makeover.

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced the reopening of the newly renovated Sloatsburg Service Area Sept. 10, 2024. The service area is the largest one on the NYS Thruway and Features Shake Shack, Chick-fil-A, Panda Express, DunkinÕ, Starbucks, Applegreen C-Store and Taste NY Products.

The interior of the restaurant buildings was gutted and new restaurants and restrooms, two family assist rooms, a private nursing area and phone charging stations were added. Joining the restaurant lineup are Panda Express, Dunkin’, Starbucks, Applegreen C-Store and Taste NY Products.

The 31,000-square foot facility logs 42,000 vehicle visits per day or 15.3 million per year and is one of the state’s busiest.

“The Service Area redevelopment project is one of several initiatives the Thruway Authority is involved in to modernize the Thruway system and improve the travel experience for motorists,” said Frank Hoare, the executive director of the Thruway Authority.

Other amenities include playground and dog walking areas, an adult changing station and six high-speed electric vehicle chargers.

The Thruway has installed 64 universal fast-charging stations at rest stops across the state with plans to add another 16 by the end of the year. When the project is finished, 130 vehicle charging stations will be deployed, with an average of 30 miles between each.
