Prince William and Princess Catherine rarely discuss their domestic life. However, their living arrangements at Kensington Palace are not quite what one might anticipate. This is due to the fact that they don’t sleep in an upstairs bedroom like most couples – a floor plan of their residence in Apartment 1A of the iconic London building reveals the location of the bedrooms, according to Cambridgeshire Live.
Despite relocating to Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Estate in September 2022 with their three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, their former home, which remains listed as the family’s official residence, has always been somewhat enigmatic.
Rather than being upstairs, the primary bedroom they used to occupy was on the ground floor of Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace. This was previously the home of Princess Margaret and boasts 20 rooms, four floors, its own lift, gym, and nine staff rooms.

The late Royal author Christopher Warwick clarified why it’s referred to as an ‘apartment’ on True Royalty’s Royal Beat. He said: “All of these Royal residences at Kensington Palace are called apartments, which of course makes people immediately think they are flats like the American term for an apartment.
“They are not. If you think of Kensington Palace in a way, it is built around three courtyards. If you kind of think of them as being these wonderful red brick terrace houses. Because they are all joined, but separate houses.”
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who shared a candid video on Monday, September 9, about Kate’s cancer journey, have access to Anmer Hall in Norfolk but now reside permanently at the more modest four-bedroom Adelaide Cottage in Windsor.
Adelaide Cottage, nestled within the Crown Estate’s private 655-acre Royal park, was built in 1831 as a retreat for Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV. The cottage boasts a rich history filled with fascinating tales and scandalous past events.
Among its many famous residents, Adelaide Cottage was a favourite dwelling of Queen Victoria, who often took her breakfast there. Perhaps one of the most notable former inhabitants was Group Captain Peter Townsend, the love interest of Princess Margaret.
Townsend, a former RAF pilot and later an equerry to King George VI, embarked on a well-known love affair with Princess Margaret. Their relationship was particularly controversial due to Townsend being a divorced man who was 16 years older than Margaret.
In 2015, Adelaide Cottage underwent significant renovations and now features some seriously elaborate decorations. Reports suggest that the master bedroom ceiling is adorned with gilded dolphins and rope decoration.
Following Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018, there were brief suggestions that Adelaide Cottage would become their new Windsor home. It was said that the couple appreciated the privacy of the cottage and its proximity to London.
