Driver in wrong-way Rt. 4 crash in Teaneck facing multiple charges

A New York man is facing a range of drug, theft and assault by auto charges after allegedly leaving the scene of a two-vehicle crash in Bergen County Sunday night, authorities said.

Emelio Lutchmansingh, 24, of Queens, was arrested following the crash in Teaneck at 11:13 p.m. Sunday, according to a press release from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. He was hospitalized along with two occupants of the other vehicle involved in the collision.

Responding officers determined that a BMW M3 operated by Lutchmansingh was traveling east in the westbound lanes of Route 4 and collided head-on with a Jeep Compass, the press release stated. Lutchmansingh fled the scene on foot but was apprehended a short distance from the crash by members of the Teaneck Police Department and Bergen County Sheriff’s Office.

Lutchmansingh and all five occupants of the Jeep were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Two members in the Jeep suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash and remain hospitalized, according to the prosecutor’s office.

An investigation revealed suspected cocaine in the BMW, and the license plates on the vehicle were previously reported stolen, the release stated.

Lutchmansingh was charged with third-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and motor vehicle alteration; fourth-degree resisting arrest, receiving stolen property and two counts of assault by auto; and three disorderly persons offenses of assault by auto, along with various motor vehicle summonses.

Lutchmansingh remained hospitalized as of Monday morning and is in the custody of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office pending a first court appearance.
