It’s been a week since the first and possibly only presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
We asked readers to vote in our poll that closed over the weekend, asking who they thought won and whether the debate swayed their vote.
Scroll to check out the results and read comment from local readers who agreed to fill out our survey.
But, of course, a lot of news has transpired over this time: the Trump-Vance ticket doubled down on the discredited story about Haitians eating cats and dogs in Springfield, Ohio. The Harris-Walz campaign launched a new outreach effort focused on the Latino community. On Sunday, there was an apparent assassination attempt against Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
This poll is unscientific and expresses the sentiment of readers concerning the head-to-head between Harris and Trump.

Question: Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump faced off in debate hosted by ABC Tuesday night. How did the debate impact your vote for president?
“The presidential debate on September 10th deepened my confidence in Vice President Kamala Harris’ ability to lead, to stay cool under pressure, and frankly, to put together coherent thoughts. Trump on the other hand seemed agitated and confused. He is a man who craves validation and adulation and will get it anywhere he can find it, including in the arms of some of the world’s worst autocrats and dictators. Such need for praise and coddling is an obvious weakness our enemies would easily exploit putting our national security and safety at risk. Indeed, Vice president Harris seemed to be the only one in the room in touch with reality, clear headed, coherent, and laying out plans for how to help regular Americans. Trump on the other hand, only has “concepts of a plan.” Last night there were two people, but only one capable adult in the room fit to be president: Vice President Harris.” – Emily Frith, Nashville
“It really didn’t but if you listen to what Harris was saying then you better understand communism and where are we going to get all this money and where all the money from in the last 3 and 1/2 years” – John Snyder, Crossville
“I cannot vote for trump again after actions on January 6.” – James Hayes, Mt. Juliet
“I feel a little better about voting for Kamala after the debate. She seemed well composed and on top of the topics at hand.” – Ethan Ring, Thompson’s Station
“Kamala all the way!” – Linda Hicks, Murfreesboro
“It didn’t impact my vote, but it once again showed the partisan bias of the legacy media.” – Jason Huntley, Murfreesboro
“Confirmed my opinion of the candidates’ readiness for office and their ability to act quickly on their feet or the lack of that ability.” – Joe Wright, Franklin
“Not much. I knew that VP Harris was the only adult in the debate.” – Marcie Barfield, Smyrna
“The debate demonstrated the candidates’ ability to focus and engage with the moderators as well as elaborate on their ideas. There could have been more pointed questions asked but the tenor of the debate really dictated the pathway.” – Sylvia Russell, Nashville
