Oak Ridge fire chief to speak on Safe Haven Baby Box at Altrusa meeting

Oak Ridge Fire Department Chief Travis Solomon will be speaking on Oak Ridge’s new Safe Haven Baby Box at the Sept. 25 meeting of Altrusa International of Oak Ridge.

The meeting will be held at the Doubletree Hotel by Hilton, 215 S. Illinois Ave, Oak Ridge.

The Safe Haven Baby Box was installed this summer at the city’s Central Fire Station, also known as Fire Station No. 3, located at 333 Tuskegee Drive. As reported in The Oak Ridger, it was unveiled at a ceremony on June 12. It provides a place for mothers in crisis to safely and anonymously give up their baby. They baby will be taken care of swiftly and the mother will not be identified or prosecuted.

Solomon has worked for more than 25 years in emergency services, according to the Altrusa news release. He has has served with the Oak Ridge Fire Department since February 2016, first as the fire marshal. He was promoted to chief in December 2020, after serving as interim chief since August. Prior to coming to Oak Ridge, he was a deputy state fire marshal with the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office for just over 13 years. He served as assistant supervisor for the Eastern Region. He also served and worked up through the ranks at New Market Fire Department.

Solomon earned his Bachelor of Science degree in fire science from Columbia Southern University, and his Associate in Science on fire protection from Walters State Community College. Among his dozens of certifications and licenses, he holds his Chief Fire Officer Designation and fire marshal designation with the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE). In November 2020, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee appointed him to the Commission on Firefighting Personnel Standards and Education as a representative of the Tennessee Fire Chief’s Association, Tennessee Fire Safety Inspectors Association, and the Tennessee Fireman’s Association. He is also the president of the East Tennessee Regional Council of Fire Chiefs.

The in-person Altrusa meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a time to socialize. The lunch buffet begins at 11:45 a.m. If desired, the buffet cost is $17.50, cash or check only. A short business meeting will begin at noon and the program will follow. Reservations should be made by sending an email to: altrusareservations@gmail.com by noon Monday, Sept. 23. When making the reservation, state whether you intend to eat. The public is invited, but please make a reservation.
