Sep. 23—Welcome to the weekly good news roundup, bringing you some of the great “good news” from around New Mexico.
Climbing for a cause
Three New Mexicans will travel to Ecuador at the end of this week to scale the Cayambe Mountain, which is a nearly 19,000-foot volcano in the northern part of the country. Kyle Stepp, Jacob Fox and Sean O’Neill will make the climb on Oct. 3 and are doing it in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Range of Motion Project or ROMP. That’s a nonprofit providing high-quality prosthetic care to those in need in Ecuador and Guatemala. In addition , two other climbing groups will be hiking two other mountains in Ecuador — Chimborazo, which is over 20,000 feet and Cotopaxi, which is over 19,000 feet.
ROMP is looking to reach a fundraising goal of $500,000 in celebration of its 10th anniversary. Those interested in the cause can visit https://secure.qgiv.com/event/climbingforromp2024/ to make a donation. So far, the nonprofit has raised $282,696, which is 56% of its goal.
Bridging the digital divide
The nonprofits Adelante and DiverseIT are partnering with Albuquerque Public Schools on a laptop distribution event for low-income families on Thursday. The event at Edward Gonzales Elementary School, located at 554 90th Street SW, will feature a group training so children and their families can learn how to properly use the laptops in addition to the laptop distribution. A free pizza dinner also will be provided for families.
This event is made possible due to funding from the New Mexico Community Trust Fund.
