The Florida panhandle — including Tallahassee and the campuses of Florida State University and Florida A&M University — are in the cone of uncertainty for the track of Hurricane Helene, the National Hurricane Center said.
The entire coast of Florida is under at least a tropical storm warning, with areas closest to the possible landfall zone under a hurricane warning. The hurricane center warned residents to complete preparations by early Thursday morning and follow evacuation orders from local officials.
Helene is expected to bring storm surges along the state’s Gulf coast from the lower keys north to Mexico Beach. Storm surges of more than 9 feet possible north of Tampa Bay through the Big Bend.
Forecasters said that the exact track of Helene could still shift east or west and life-threatening impacts may be felt hundreds of miles from the storm’s center.
