Authorities continued their search for an inmate who is considered dangerous after he escaped four days ago from a county jail in Northern California.
Caleb Lee Duerr, 39, escaped from the Plumas County Jail about 8:15 a.m. Friday during a recreation period, leaving a yard at the detention facility and getting past two fenced areas. He escaped wearing dark blue jail clothing. Duerr stands 6-foot-1, weighs about 165 pounds and he has brown hair and blue eyes.
Duerr escaped from the jail and made it to an O’Reilly Auto Parts store, where he immediately got a ride from someone who was at the store, the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday evening in a news release.
Sheriff’s officials said the man who gave Duerr a ride told investigators he dropped off the escaped inmate at Highway 70 and County Road A-23 near Beckwourth. Duerr was last seen between 9:30 and 10 a.m. Friday walking and heading south on Road A-23 near the gravel pits.
The Sheriff’s Office called in all its available staff to help find Duerr, officials said.
At 8:35 a.m. Friday, the Sheriff’s Office notified the Plumas Unified School District of the jail escape. Sheriff’s officials began calling other law enforcement agencies in the area for their K9 units and aircraft to help find Duerr. Notifications then went out to the public.
After the public notifications were made, the Sheriff’s Office received several reports of people spotting Duerr in various areas between Quincy and Portola. Patrol deputies responded to these potential sightings, but they all proved to be misidentification. Duerr was not there.
Sheriff’s officials said K9 units did not pick up a scent in the area of Road A-23, and aircraft searches were not successful. Personnel from Plumas, Sierra, Butte and Yuba counties, the California Highway Patrol and the U.S. Forest Service, along with aircraft from the CHP and Washoe County searched for Duerr throughout Friday.
The Sheriff’s Office has been working with multiple county agencies, along with other local, state and federal agencies to find and apprehend Duerr.
Sheriff’s officials said Duerr, since his jail escape, has sent emails to people, which suggests Duerr has either obtained a cell phone or has access to a computer with internet service.
Duerr has family and friends in California, Oregon and Nevada, sheriff’s officials believe it’s possible the escaped inmate left the area to get help from them. Sheriff’s officials said Duerr is considered dangerous, and they urged anyone who sees him to not speak to him or help him.
