Who are JD Vance’s children? All about Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel

JD Vance is a proud father of three children; Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel.

The Republican vice presidential nominee has often spoken about parenting, while also facing criticism for his 2021 comments about “childless cat ladies” in the Democratic party leadership, including Vice President Kamala Harris (who has two stepchildren).

The Ohio politician has long been a proponent of having children, even tweeting in March 2021, “Our country’s low birth rates have made many elites sociopaths.”

And when it comes to his three children with wife Usha Chilukuri Vance, the politician has sent them shout-outs at his events.

“If you’re watching, daddy loves you very much,” the Ohio politician said at the Republican National Convention, then playfully added, “but get your butts in bed, it’s 10 o’clock.”

Vance is the author of the bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” published in 2016, which tells of his upbringing in Appalachia and sparked a conversation about the socioeconomic conditions of white, working class people.

Born and raised in Ohio, the politician went on to become a senator for his home state. Vance is an Iraq War veteran who graduated from Ohio State University and Yale Law School.

At Yale Law School, according to the New York Times, Vance grew close with professor Amy Chua, author of her own bestselling memoir, “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother,” detailing her strict parenting methods.

In his speech at the Republican National Convention on July 17, Vance talked about his vision of the American dream, emphasizing the importance of his children in his life.

“My most important American dream was becoming a good husband and a good dad,” he said. “I wanted to give my kids the things that I didn’t have when I was growing up.”

“And that’s the accomplishment that I’m proudest of,” he added.

Ewan

Ewan was born in 2017. Three weeks before his birth, Usha and JD Vance spoke with NBC News and revealed that they found out the gender of the baby early on in the pregnancy.

“We found out right away because JD, there was no way he could wait,” Usha Vance said.

“I wanted to know at like nine weeks but apparently that’s physically impossible,” he added.

While talking on the Senate floor in February 2024, Vance referred to his eldest child as his “6-year-old baby boy” then playfully corrected himself, saying he’s “not so much of a baby anymore.”

Vivek

Another baby boy named Vivek came along three years later in 2020. In February 2024, Vance wished his son a happy birthday on the Senate floor and read a passage of the Dr. Seuss book “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”

“I’m sorry Vivek that I can’t be with you for your birthday dinner, but I want you to know that Daddy loves you very much and I’m going to read this into the record because maybe you can watch it at home,” he said.

Mirabel

In December 2021, the couple welcomed their third child, a daughter named Mirabel.

“We were blessed with an early Christmas present this year. Everyone please meet Mirabel Rose Vance, our first girl. Mama and baby both doing great, and we’re feeling very grateful this Christmas season,” Vance wrote on Instagram at the time.

The baby girl appeared in a blooper reel of a campaign video with her father in 2022.

While talking with Fox News, Vance recently described his feelings on parenting.

“I love being a dad and Usha loves being a mom and I think we love doing that together. And that’s not gonna change, whether Trump picks me to be vice president or not,” he said.

What JD Vance and Usha Vance have said about parenting

When asked about the role that their different religious faiths play in raising their children, Usha Vance offered the following response.

“There are a lot of things that we just agree on, especially when it comes to family life (and) how to raise our kids. And so I think the answer really is we just talk a lot,” she said.

When asked what kind of a father she thought her husband would be, Usha Vance said a “great” one.

“He’s actually a very gentle person. I think that comes across in the way he tells his story. But we have two dogs and the way that he treats them, they’re like his babies. So I’ve seen him with vulnerable creatures for many years now,” she said.
