An iconic Boise doughnut shop announced that it would close next month after decades of business.
But in a last-minute flurry, DK Donuts, 1300 W. State St., will remain open after all, owner Angkearot Long said.
On Tuesday, Long was given 30 days’ notice by the landlord after negotiations for a new lease failed, he said. But after DK had posted a sign saying that the restaurant would close on Oct. 27, Long said he got a phone call Wednesday. A real estate agent told him that the building had just been sold — and that the new owner would agree to his terms for another 10-year lease.
“I cannot believe that,” Long said. “He just called me right now.”
The new lease agreement is slated to be signed next week, he said.
“It’s crazy, right?” he said incredulously.
Long took over DK Donuts in 2004 before purchasing the business in 2009, he said. The locally owned, standalone doughnut destination has been a State Street staple since the prior century.
Long said he didn’t know when DK Donuts took over at that location, but Idaho Statesman archives trace it back as far as 1994.
Beloved for its bacon maple bar, DK Donuts is a go-to that seemed like it would always exist in Boise. News of the supposed closure traveled quickly among customers, Long said, even spreading online.
Now DK fans can look forward to coffee and doughnuts for years.
And there’s more good news. Long also plans to open a second DK Donuts shop in Nampa early next year at 200 12th Ave. S., near the Nampa Public Library.
