Woman shot in domestic incident in northwestern Berks; husband charged [Update]

A woman was seriously wounded in a domestic-related shooting Friday morning at her home in Bethel Township, and her husband has been charged, Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams said.

According to a release from the DA’s office:

A 911 call was placed to the Berks County Department of Emergency Services about 9:10 a.m.

The caller, who identified himself as Phillip Boltz, told the call taker that he had just shot his wife with a .22-caliber rifle.

Police from Bethel and Tulpehocken townships and state police found the 84-year-old woman inside the house in the 1200 block of Airport Road with a gunshot wound to her head.

She was transported by ambulance to Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey.

Officers took her husband, Howard “Phillip” Boltz, into custody.

Bethel police and county detectives investigated, and Boltz was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and related offenses. He was taken to the Central Processing Center in the courthouse, where he was awaiting arraignment later Friday.

The victim is reported to be in stable condition in the hospital.
