A 29-year-old Kearny man has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident in Lyndhurst on Thursday evening, authorities said.
Steveen G. Novillo-Cabrera was arrested on Friday in Lyndhurst and charged with knowingly leaving thescene of an accident resulting in death, hindering apprehension, endangering an injured victim, tampering with evidence, and related motor vehicle offenses, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said in a release.
Around 9:50 p.m. on Thursday, Lyndhurst police responded responded to a 9-1-1 call of pedestrian struck on Ridge Road near the intersection of Milton Avenue. George Arnold, 57, of Lyndhurst, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Through the investigation by Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, it was determined that a 2020 Honda Civic struck Arnold and fled the scene. Detectives identified Novillo-Cabrera as the driver of the car and discovered that he attempted to repair the car following the accident, the prosecutor’s office said.
The suspect was taken to the Bergen County Jail prior to his appearance in Bergen County Superior Court.
