Live updates: Yankees jump in front thanks to Guardians error

The New York Yankees sprinted out to a 1-0 lead in the ALCS with a 5-2 Game 1 win in the Bronx, powered by homers from Giancarlo Stanton and Juan Soto and a stellar outing from Carlos Rodón.

New York will look to get a tighter grip on the series in Game 2 on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, with ace Gerrit Cole on the mound. Cole started twice in the ALDS against the Royals — with the Yankees winning both games — and enters Game 2 of the American League Championship Series at 1-0 this postseason, with a 3.00 ERA in 12 innings pitched with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Cleveland will counter with Tanner Bibee. He has logged 8 2/3 innings in two starts in these playoffs — both were Guardians wins over the Tigers in their ALDS — and struck out nine while walking three. Brayan Rocchio had two of Cleveland’s six hits in Game 1, including a solo home run in the sixth inning, but he’ll need more help from the middle of the Cleveland lineup. José Ramírez, Lane Thomas and Josh Naylor — Cleveland’s 3-4-5 hitters — combined to go 0-for-11 with a walk and five strikeouts in Game 1.

  • Guardians limit damage to 1 Yankees run in first

The Yankees had runners on first and second and a run on the board before the Guardians recorded their first out of the game. But Tanner Bibee got out of the jam with strikeouts of Austin Wells and Jazz Chisholm Jr. and a nice play in foul territory by right fielder Will Brennan on a Giancarlo Stanton fly ball to limit the damage to one run.

Yankees lead, 1-0 after one inning.

  • Costly error gets Yankees on the board early

The Yankees are on board thanks to a very unfortunate infield error. Gleyber Torres doubled and Juan Soto singled to lead off the bottom of the first with runners on the corners and no outs. Cleveland then appeared to have its first out in the bag on an Aaron Judge infield pop-up.

But shortstop Brayan Rocchio misplayed the ball and watched it bounce off his glove onto the turf. The error allowed Judge to reach safely and Torres to score from third.

  • Gerrit Cole’s off to a strong start. A 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout of Kyle Manzardo retires the top of the Guardians order.

  • We’re moments away from first pitch. Gerrit Cole is warming up on the mound for the Yankees.

  • Guardians drop injured P Alex Cobb from postseason roster

It’s not relevant to Game 2, but the Guardians have dropped starting pitcher Alex Cobb from their postseason roster because of a back strain. He’ll be replaced by Ben Lively, who posted a 13-10 record in the regular season with a 3.81 ERA and 1.245 WHIP in 29 starts.

Cobb, 37, was limited by injury to three appearances in the regular season. He made two postseason starts but lasted just 2 2/3 innings in Monday’s Game 1 loss to the Yankees before leaving the game due to hip tightness and a back spasm. Now his season is done.

  • Gerrit Cole to start for Yankees

Six-time All-Star and reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole will start for the Yankees. Cole posted a 3.41 ERA and 1.126 WHIP with 99 strikeouts in 95 innings of a regular season that was limited by injury.

Here’s New York’s starting lineup for Game 2:

  • Tanner Bibee gets the start for Guardians
