Residents return to apartments after Downtown Pittsburgh fire

Residents were allowed to return to Midtown Towers in Downtown Pittsburgh after a fire Tuesday evening, according to city police.

Firefighters were called to the Liberty Avenue apartment building run by Pittsburgh’s housing authority at 6:45 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from a 13th floor unit, police said. The blaze was quickly extinguished and didn’t spread to other units, though officials said other apartments had water damage.

No injuries were reported, police said. A Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus provided shelter to evacuated residents and the Salvation Army provided blankets, food and hot beverages at the scene. Tenants whose units were affected by the fire and water damage were offered housing elsewhere in the building.

The fire investigation unit is working to determine the cause.

TSA finds 35th gun of the year at Pittsburgh airport

A gun was seized at Pittsburgh International Airport’s main security checkpoint on Monday by TSA officers. The loaded .38 caliber firearm was found inside a Washington County man’s carry-on bag, agency officials said Tuesday.

It was the 35th gun found at the airport’s security checkpoints so far in 2024, according to statistics released by TSA. That figure ties the second most amount of guns found at security checkpoints since 2017 — there were also 35 guns confiscated in 2019. The record during that time period is 44 firearms in 2024.

Live military grenade found in Greene County

A live military grenade was disassembled in Greene County after being found in advance of an estate sale at a home in Morris Township, TribLive news partner WTAE reported.

Greene County Regional Police Department Chief William DeForte said live ordnance, such as this one from the Vietnam War era, can be very dangerous.

“It’s not unusual to find this type of ordnance in people’s houses who had served in the military in past generations,” he told the news outlet. “They would bring it home as a war trophy.”
