Early voting turnout strong

HIGH POINT — Turnout on the first day for in-person early voting didn’t disappoint as large crowds showed up at High Point polls Thursday to cast ballots in a state considered a battleground for the presidential race.

Early voting in Guilford County was on pace for its first day matching or surpassing the total number of ballots cast on opening day during the last presidential election in 2020.

Guilford County Elections Director Charlie Collicutt said Thursday’s turnout didn’t surprise him given the high profile of North Carolina in national political circles.

“We have a lot of sites and a lot of opportunities, and I think people are taking advantage,” Collicutt told The High Point Enterprise.

The wait in lines at Guilford County early voting polls reached up to 45 minutes, Collicutt said.

“At some other locations it’s a five-minute wait — it just depends,” he said.

The Guilford County Board of Elections has 28 sites for early voting, including five in the High Point area:

• Washington Terrace Park, 101 Gordon St.

• Deep River Recreation Center, 1529 Skeet Club Road.

• The Culler Senior Center at the former Oak Hollow Mall, 921 Eastchester Dr.

• Jamestown Town Hall, 301 E. Main St.

• Allen Jay Recreation Center, 1073 E. Springfield Road.

Early voting concludes Nov. 2 leading into Election Day on Nov. 5.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson made High Point the final stop of a campaign swing through five cities on the first day for early voting. Robinson, the current lieutenant governor, was scheduled to be joined by Republican Randolph County Sheriff Greg Seabolt at a town hall at the High Point Family Worship Center.

Robinson is running against Democratic nominee and state Attorney General Josh Stein. Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper can’t run for reelection because of the two-term limit after first winning the seat in 2016.
