Pueblo police are investigating the city’s 17th homicide of 2024 after a man was allegedly punched by a 14-year-old boy and later died from injuries sustained in the altercation, according to a Pueblo Police Department news release.
No charges have been filed against the juvenile at this time, Bianca Hicks, Pueblo PD spokesperson, told the Chieftain.
On Sept. 27 at approximately 5:21 p.m., Pueblo PD officers responded to the 1100 block of York Avenue on a report of an assault.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the reporting party, a 14-year-old male, providing aid to an unhoused man.
Officers “learned that the adult male approached the juvenile asking if he wanted to ‘smoke drugs,'” according to the release. The juvenile declined and attempted to leave, but police say the man “continued to try to engage the juvenile in conversation.”
The teenager did not respond and the man allegedly “lunged” at him, at which point the juvenile “punched the man one time in the head,” according to the release.
Police say the man then fell and struck his head on the street. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment but died Oct. 12 of his injuries. The Pueblo County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased once his next of kin has been notified and also determine the man’s cause and manner of death.
