The Met Office has warned of a danger to life as parts of the UK are hit by Storm Ashley.
Winds of 80mph are predicted in places, with the first named storm of the season “likely” to bring a threat of injuries, the weather agency said.
An amber wind warning for the north-west of Scotland is in place until midnight on Sunday, with the Met Office warning “injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown on to coastal roads, sea fronts and properties”.
Meteorologist Dan Stroud said “very strong, severe gales” will coincide with high spring tides, which could also result in “very large waves”.
A less severe yellow wind warning is also running until midnight for all of Scotland and Northern Ireland and parts of north-west England and Wales. This could lead to disruption such as damage to buildings and power cuts.
The north of Scotland will remain under a yellow warning for wind until 9am on Monday.

London and the South-East

Midlands
East Midlands: Rain quickly arriving from the west and will be heavy at times throughout the morning, accompanied by strong winds. Rain clearing through the afternoon, giving way to sunny spells and largely dry conditions. Remaining breezy throughout however. Maximum temperature 16C.
West Midlands: Rather wet this morning, with a band of rain spreading steadily eastwards. Occasional heavy spells for a time, before turning brighter, with scattered showers developing this afternoon. Windy, especially in the west, with a risk of gales at times. Maximum temperature 16C.
East Midlands: A bright day with plenty of sunny spells, though the occasional light shower may develop in the afternoon. It will feel breezy at times, especially across the Peak District. Maximum temperature 15C.
West Midlands: Dry and more settled at first, with sunny spells and easing winds. Scattered showers developing in the west by late morning, spreading eastwards and turning heavier through the afternoon. Maximum temperature 15C.
North-East
Rain quickly arriving from the west and will be heavy at times throughout the morning, accompanied by strong winds. Rain clearing early afternoon, giving way to sunny spells and the odd shower. Winds however continuing to strengthen through the afternoon. Maximum temperature 15C.

North-West
Windy, with gales likely along western coasts. A band of rain spreads steadily eastwards through this morning, with occasionally heavy downpours in places, before turning brighter this afternoon, with patchy cloud, sunny spells and blustery showers. Rather mild. Maximum temperature 15C.
A changeable day with a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers. Winds considerably lighter than on Sunday, though still gusty at times in any heavier downpours. Maximum temperature 15C.
Scotland
Rain will affect many places for a time, followed by winds: some severe.

Northern Ireland
Overnight rain soon clearing, then sunny spells and blustery showers, the showers, frequent heavier in west later. Strong to gale force south then southwest winds, severe gales mostly coastal areas. Maximum temperature 15C.
Some bright or sunny spells and a lot of dry weather with just a few showers remaining. Strong southwest winds, easing a little during the day. Maximum temperature 13 C.
Wales
Windy, with gales and coastal flooding possible in the southwest and northwest. Otherwise, a wet start, with a band of heavy rain sweeping eastwards through the morning. Turning brighter by the afternoon, with isolated showers developing at times. Maximum temperature 17C.
More settled than Sunday, with sunny spells and a sprinkling of showers, these heaviest in the south. Generally light winds, however breezy at times along coasts and over high ground. Maximum temperature 16C.
