King Charles III is set to receive an honorable new title while traveling through Samoa after his activities in Australia in October. The monarch and Queen Camilla left Australia for the island country on Oct. 23, receiving a warm welcome upon their arrival at the Faleolo International Airport.
Tofaeono Kitiona Tofaeono, a Siumu village representative, said they plan to bestow the title of Toa’iga o Tumua, or paramount chief, to Charles on Thursday, Oct. 24, as reported by The Guardian. The title is reportedly “the traditional name for the meeting ground for Siumu’s high chiefs.”

Along with the new title, Charles is set to walk through a mangrove reserve to see the effect climate change has had on Samoa and the surrounding area.
Lenatai Victor Tamapua, a Samoan chief and a member of Parliament, said of the issue of climate change, via The Independent, “The king tide today is about twice it was 20, 30 years ago, and that is affecting our land and it’s eating away at some of the areas that are so hard for us to control. People have to move inwards, inland now.”

Charles is also in Samoa to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), opening the global summit but not taking part in the discussions between various global leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Charles will be in Samoa for four days, following a six-day tour of Australia. Many locals shared excitement for his visit, with a Samoan woman named Sina Tuuu Schwenke telling The Guardian, “No one ever dreamed about the king coming to our village and knowing that he will be staying here is something that we take pride in and look forward to. This means a lot to us.”
