Police identify man who died at scene of Newport News shooting

Police identified on Friday the man who died in a shooting on Wednesday.

At around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 7300 block of River Road, not far from the James River Bridge.

There, police found a man with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim, identified as Jonathon Powell, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Powell, 33, was a Newport News resident.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
