One person is dead and multiple people are injured following a mass shooting on the Tuskegee University campus during the school’s 100th homecoming weekend.
The shooting happened on campus early Sunday morning and resulted in the death of a non-university individual, said Thonnia Lee, spokeswoman for the University. The total number of injuries had not been confirmed, but students are among them.
“The parents of this individual have been notified,” a statement from the university said. “Several others including Tuskegee University students were injured and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.
“Emergency responders, along with campus and local law enforcement, have secured the scene. The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is conducting an active investigation. the university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”
The person killed was male, but authorities had not yet identified him.
The shooting occurred on campus near West Commons.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is conducting an investigation in the shooting.
