Official from Germany’s far-right AfD brands court ruling ‘absurd’

A regional leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) on Wednesday slammed a court decision to allow the party to remain under investigation by intelligence services.

The Baden-Württemberg Higher Administrative Court’s ruling is “just absurd,” said Markus Frohnmaier, head of the AfD chapter in the south-western state.

Frohnmaier, who was born in Romania, told dpa: “The AfD is so inclusive that it has elected a party leader with Romanian roots.”

“The AfD does not want Germans with and without a migrant background to be treated unequally under the law,” he added.

The Mannheim-based court’s decision allows the Baden-Württemberg Office for the Protection for the Constitution to continue classifying the AfD in the state as a suspected right-wing extremist organization.
