The Jackson Police Department launched an internal investigation into the “inactions” of police officers after a resident crashed her car resulting in a fire.
Tina Carter Sawyer was traveling on Suncrest Drive in the early hours of Saturday morning when her car crashed, according to Chief of Police Jospeh Wade. Wade made the announcement of the internal investigation during Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba’s Monday press conference.
“Based on our investigation, the vehicle was traveling at a very high rate of speed on Suncrest,” Wade said. “The vehicle crashed, immediately was engulfed in flames and was literally divided, the impact was so high.”

Sawyer died as a result of the crash.
The reason why an internal JPD investigation is being launched is due to the observation of a “JPD vehicle passing that location shortly after the accident.”
“We immediately launched an internal affairs investigation,” Wade said. “My question is there are questionable actions, but more importantly there are inactions during this situation. We are trying to build something that is special at the Jackson Police Department. If it was a pursuit then it was a pursuit. But your questionable actions and your inactions will not be tolerated by me.”
The “officers” involved were placed on administrative leave, Wade said, but he stopped short of saying how many officers were involved and who they are. The chief said he was in contact with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation throughout the weekend over the matter and has a meeting with the bureau this afternoon.

“We’re creating trust, not distrust,” Wade said. “We expect our officers to have the utmost integrity and when they don’t then they don’t fit my mission and my vision for the police department.”
