Rylan Clark declares love as he marks double announcement with ‘gutted’ message

Rylan Clark has declared his love as he marked a double announcement from his BBC Radio 2 colleagues. The radio and TV star, who hosts Rylan on Saturday, was reponding to the news that Zoe Ball is stepping down from her breakfast show on the station.

The 53-year-old, who took over the Radio 2 morning programme in 2019 from Chris Evans, said she was leaving the show to focus on family. Announcing the news on her Tuesday (November 19) show, she said: “After six years of fun times alongside you all on the breakfast show, Iā€™ve decided itā€™s time to step away from the early alarm call and start a new chapter.

“You know I think the world of you all, listeners, and it truly has been such a privilege to share the mornings with you, to go through lifeā€™s little ups and downs, we got through the lockdown together, didnā€™t we? Weā€™ve shared a hell of a lot, the good times, the tough times, thereā€™s been a lot of laughter. And I am going to miss you cats.”

Zoe said her last show will be on December 20, adding: ā€œJust in time for Christmas with plenty of fun and shenanigans. While Iā€™m stepping away from the Breakfast Show, Iā€™m not disappearing entirely ā€“ Iā€™ll still be a part of the Radio 2 family, with more news in the New Year. Iā€™m excited to embrace my next chapter, including being a mum in the mornings, and I canā€™t wait to tune in on the school run!”

Shortly after it was confirmed that Scott Mills will be taking over. In a statement, he said: “Zoe and I have been such good friends now for over 25 years and have spent much of that time as part of the same radio family here at Radio 2 and also on Radio 1. Sheā€™s done an incredible job on this show over the past six years, and I am beyond excited to be handed the baton.

“It feels ever since recording my first shows as a kid for an audience of one, my mum, all roads since have led to this amazing opportunity. It really is a lifelong dream come true to follow in the footsteps of Sir Terry, Chris and Zoe to be the new presenter of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show.”

Scott, Iā€™ve never been more happy for someone.

“If you grazed your knee you would bleed radio. I know how much this means to you and Iā€™m so so proud of you. Just gutted we wonā€™t have many late nights nowā€¦.. actually we will. Love you both x @BBCRadio2 @ZoeTheBall @scott_mills.”
